Asian Youth Games 2009

29 June to 7 July 2009

Singapore recently hosted the inaugural Asian Youth Games (AYG) from 29 June to 7 July 2009. Some 45 Asian countries sent about 1,300 top juniors to compete in the 9 sports offered, namely Athletics, Aquatics (Swimming and Diving), FIBA 33 (Basketball), Beach Volleyball, Bowling, Football, Sailing, Shooting, and Table Tennis. The AYG gathered Asian youth from near and far to celebrate the joy of sports, promote learning, cultural exchange, and fostering friendship among the participants.

JobsDB Campus caught up with 3 young Singaporean volunteers who helped to make the first ever Asian Youth Games a success.Cheng Mei Mei

Cheng Mei Mei was a media relations assistant at the FIBA 33 Basketball competition, held at Anglican High School. Mei Mei shares more…

“I’ve just finished my A-levels and will soon start my Bachelor of Nursing studies at the National University of Singapore. I’ve always wanted to work in the medical industry as I find it very meaningful to help people.

This is my first time volunteering and it’s been really interesting and fun working as a media relations assistant here at the FIBA 33 Basketball competition for the AYG!

My job involved helping journalists arrange for interviews with the athletes and coaches from the different national teams, and it’s been really eye-opening to meet lots of new people from different Asian countries as well.

The cool thing is that I also got to watch the games Live and I’ve also learnt more about playing basketball now! It’s been an overwhelmingly amazing experience overall!”

Lim Shao Wei was a communications device assistant at the Beach Volleyball competition at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. While waiting to enlist for National Service (NS), he decided to volunteer at the first ever Asian Youth Games (AYG) held in Singapore. Lim Shao Wei (l), and Edison Yeo (r)

Shao Wei shares more…

“I’ve just finished my Diploma in Business Management from Millennia Institute, and thought it would be fantastic to be a part of the first ever AYG. As I also play beach volleyball, it was great to watch some of Asia’s best young players in action as well!

As a communications device assistant, I was manning the radio frequency communication networks and also taking care of all the walkie-talkies that our AYG staff used to communicate with each other during the games.

After my NS, I’ll probably further my studies in either Psychology or become a Vet as I love animals.”

Edison Yeo was a venue management assistant at the Beach Volleyball competition at Siloso Beach, Sentosa. Edison is a final year student at Temasek Polytechnic and he has been part of the AYG for the last five months as part of his internship in the Diploma of leisure and resort management.

Edison shares more…

“It’s been a very enlightening internship for me, being involved right from the beginning in the planning stage of the beach volleyball competition here at the AYG. We’ve all worked hard and put in lots of effort and it’s amazing to see all the different departments like Finance, Marketing and Administration working together to achieve the common goals of hosting the Games.

I also enjoy playing beach volleyball in my free time, and I definitely see the sport growing in popularity in Singapore and all over the world too.

I’m also looking forward to helping out at next year’s first Youth Olympics in Singapore as well!”
