Life in the Fast Lane
Working at the World’s First Formula One™ Night Race

A special feature brought to you by Kelly Services and JobsDB.com.sg

It’s finally here! The 2008 FORMULA 1™ SingTel Grand Prix starts today and it’s going to make history as the world’s first night race, being held right here in Singapore. Beyond the excitement and glamour of the parties, the talented drivers and their professional racing teams, 4 young people share with us what it’s like to be a part of this fantastic international event –

Zonia Raymond Tan - Customer Service Officer

I’m currently studying at Singapore Polytechnic (SP), and when Kelly Services came by to recruit staff for the historic night race, I was inspired to apply for the position of a customer service officer.

I feel that being a part of the night race will serve as a memorable experience in my three years of study at SP. Furthermore, as I’m a Changi Youth Ambassador, I believe that I can bring my passion for service to a higher level as I’ll now be able to serve visitors not only at Changi Airport, but also fellow Singaporeans who are going to the night race.

My job scope as a customer service officer at the National Stadium involves directing patrons to the shuttle buses that will take them to the race site. I believe that this work experience will also enable me to become a more approachable and helpful person in the process.

The biggest challenges that I would face in my job will be to provide accurate and precise information. In order to ensure that I do not falter in these challenges, I will definitely make sure that I know my job well so that I won’t have any problems while I’m working. In addition, I may also attend to the patrons’ queries; therefore I’ll have to be ready to assist them in such an instance.

Cara Rolando Guzman - Traffic Marshal

I’m currently working as a technical staff in a manufacturing firm, and I’m a big fan of Formula One™! So when I chanced upon the job advertisements for the world’s first night race in Singapore, I decided to apply for the position of traffic marshal.

Since the 2008 FORMULA 1™ SingTel Grand Prix is an international event, the best experience I’ll gain from this would be the exposure to how an event of this magnitude is organized and conducted.  Being involved in the night race will give me much more experience in events management and also in terms of human resource. This may come in handy in the future and will also shape me to become a better customer-oriented individual.

As a traffic marshal, I’ll be assessing, marshalling and directing the traffic at the National Stadium. This is to ensure that the invited guests and general public are directed to the proper parking areas and there is an orderly flow of traffic. My job scope will also extend to the handling of emergency road situations and also traffic diversion if necessary. The biggest challenge that I would possibly face is uncooperative motorists if they refuse to follow directions given.

Derek Sim - Usher

The once-in-a-lifetime experience to feel the electrifying atmosphere of working at the first night race is what inspired me to apply for an usher job!

This is definitely a very large scale event with people from different countries visiting Singapore, and this is where I can get the chance to interact with them. And who knows? They could well be my potential future business partners! In addition, the work experience certificate from this job is a good addition to my portfolio, giving me a greater chance of securing a good job in future. It will definitely be useful in my future job interview sessions too!

My role as an usher will be in helping patrons to get around the circuit area. I’m also expected to help with their queries such as directional aids, race time and performance.

As an usher, I’ll have to deal with customers from different backgrounds, races and religions - we are the perception creators for the patrons’ experience. Therefore, we need to provide excellent customer service and also be able to handle unexpected situations during the race, and solve them in the shortest time possible to eliminate any inconvenience to the patrons. I may also help my supervisors with crowd control. Most importantly, I’m also a walking advertisement for Singapore, therefore I must always stay energetic and alert as my actions may directly affect the way foreigners perceive Singaporeans.

Barnet Koh
- Ticketing Manager

I applied as a ticketing manager because motor sports have always been my passion. Regardless of whether I can just hear the sound of the engines or have the pure luck of catching a slight glimpse of the race, I would be more than contented. Ultimately, I want to be a part of the world’s first night race!!

As a ticketing manager, I’m conducting sales of tickets/passes, assisting with lost ticket verification & re-issuance, collecting payment for the tickets/passes, and to be a checkpoint to ensure that all visitors enter the race site with a valid ticket/pass. In such a momentous and historical event with nearly 100,000 patrons per day, the greatest challenge would be for me to cater to guests from different walks of life and diverse cultures. This will require me to adopt an appropriate attitude and level of etiquette to service them.

Above all, I see myself as an ambassador for Singapore, showing our international guests the hospitality that they would expect in Singapore. It is with much pride and sense of belonging for me to be able to be a part of an important milestone for my country in staging the world’s first night race.

I hope that this working stint will sharpen both my interpersonal skills and organizational management skills. The electrifying ambience, the sound of the engines, and the eye-opening scenery will be a bonus!
