The HR Manager's Dilemma
Now think about this: who do you choose out of that multitude of applicants?
Has any of them stuck out enough? Maybe, maybe not. Has anyone asked
for a nice salary AND given you a powerful reason to grant it (many
people ask for inflated salaries, given that they can name no real
good reason why they should be granted it), almost certainly not.
The Best Reason to Get Paid a High Salary The best reason to get a
high salary is actually quite simple. You need a Unique Selling Proposition
that makes you stick out. To design a USP we need to look at companies
first. Why are companies in business? To make money. More precisely
to make a profit. The question is: how can you link yourself to the
company's profit. How can you show the hiring entity that you are
aware of the need to make profits, that you have what it takes to
make the company more profitable and that you will constantly make
sure the company makes more money. Thus you will be able to ask for
more salary since you are making the company more money. Sounds almost
too simple right? I am glad to share with you that this approach works.
Especially in entrepreneurial companies that like people with ideas
(they are out there) people who have an opinion and ideas are more
valuable than gold.

Facing The Job Interview
To better understand what I mean let's do a little experiment. Imagine you are the Human Resource manager, in charge of recruiting new personnel for a large MNC. Your door opens time after time and in come young hopeful prospects. They all have graduated from more or less well reputed institutions and they all clutch their certs, sure that the very look of that cert will blow the HR manager off his/her socks. But here you are, the door opens yet again, a new face, a new cert ... When you ask the hopeful interviewee about why you should hire him/her the answers sound pretty much the same "I work hard, I am loyal, I have a good education, etc, etc" ...
Let's look at a simple example:
For this example please put on your janitor hat. You are now applying
for a job as a janitor. Normal janitors will be happy to be shown the
broom locker and a small pay cheque at the end of the month. But you
are not a normal janitor, you understand how a company works, that a
company needs profits.
So during the job interview you mention your credentials and how you
have kept places clean and tidy. Then you mention that cleanliness is
important to keep the staff healthy and happy. Since you know that a
healthy and happy staff is more productive this will lead to better
profits. You are very interested in helping the company achieve higher
profits, thus you will do your best to keep the staff supercharged by
cleaning to a fine polish AND singing while you do it to get the room
charged with positive atmosphere
you are the singing janitor.
However, these services come at a price that you would like to negotiate
since you are able to fulfill several roles at the same time.
If you are wondering if this example sounds too far fetched you may
be surprised if you found out the truth about this example.
