We are in a constant time of change and jobs are not for life anymore. How can you better prepare yourself to ensure you are up to date and able to survive? Here are 10 tips to help you:
1. Have an up to date Resume - it is important you are able to quickly respond to internally / externally advertised positions. Ensure it has the relevant details of previous roles and achievements and make sure all contact details and referees are correct.
2. Be aware of current issues in your industry - keep up to date by reading relevant journals, internet information, newspapers and media reports. Subscribe to relevant associations and publications to keep your knowledge current.
3. Learn how to use technology - don’t be frightened by computers, modems, Internet and all of that jargon. Learn how to word process documents, create a basic spreadsheet and create a presentation using relevant software. These skills are transferable anywhere you go - you never know - you might even enjoy it!
4. Attend training to increase your skills - ask your manager / supervisor to approve courses you wish to attend. Seek out information on operational skills, personal development or interest areas. Make an action plan of how you are going to apply what you learn on the courses.
5. Be the best at what you do now- strive to be the best in your current role. Learn all you can about the role, customers and processes.
6. Go beyond others’ expectations - deliver more than you promise your boss, customers, staff members or peers. Do the extra things that will help you be remembered.
7. Be a confident presenter - ensure you feel confident in meetings to enable you to present or introduce someone or a topic. Enrol in Toastmasters or do a presentation course to increase your skills and eliminate your fears.
8. Be proud of the skills you have - stop and write down what you are good at. Focus on your strengths and review your previous experiences and achievements. Remind yourself you are doing a great job.
9. Promote yourself - let others know what you are working on, show managers / superiors complimentary letters / emails or correspondence from satisfied customers or peers. Be brave - tell someone your achievements.
10. Relax - spend time focussing on other areas of your life, take up a hobby, join a sporting team, go for a walk and fill your life with fun.
There are lots of ways to ensure you can survive in a volatile workforce. Stop and apply some of these ideas and you will feel more confident and secure about yourself.
