That’s why as a professional trainer with over 10
years of training experience, I always advocate ‘after-training’
coaching sessions to ensure implementation of the learning. Because
trainees know that if their performance after the training is being
evaluated, they will have more desire to learn. And with desire,
there will be more results.
So the purpose of training is really to move people towards higher
levels of performance through implementation of learning.
We also know that people attend training for a host of other reasons.
Some of them include:
- To confirm that what they know is right and applicable;
- To re-visit ideas that may have been forgotten or misunderstood;
- To pick up just one or two ideas and make massive results from
implementing that one
or two ideas;
- To reward employees for having done a good job. Training is
often a reward and confirmation that an employee is worth developing;
- To change mindset, attitudes and beliefs. Mindset is not easy
to change, but trainers often can change mindset because of their
objectivity and ability to see things in different perspective.
You cannot get this from an internal trainer;
- To be led! We know that leaders want to be led too! Trainers
are seen as natural leaders because they lead the training discussion
and provide coaching and mentorship to the participants.
- To feel good! Often attending training is fun and enlightening,
and is an experience worth the money, because what other types
of activities can you give both fun and education to the person?
Whatever your reason for training, make it a point to change your
behaviour with the training. And change your behaviour for the better
and improve your organisational performance. Make your training
a win-win for all. Happy training!
