Ziela Loves Being a Barista at Gloria Jean’s Coffee

"I’ve been working as a barista at Gloria Jean’s Coffee at Temasek Tower for a year. I really love my job because I love to drink coffee and I enjoy making coffee. Café Mocha and Caramel Latte are my all time favourite coffee drinks. All my friends are working here too, so we are one big happy team! It’s great to work in a comfortable and cozy environment where there’s always something happening. I like being on my feet all day as it’s never boring and there’s always things to do. A barista's job, is not just about making a good cup of coffee. It’s also about giving our customers a warm and friendly experience when they visit Gloria Jean’s. We chat with our customers and help to lighten up their day with a friendly smile and a chat.

I believe that a good barista must have a passion for making coffee, and I want to perfect my coffee making skills and represent Singapore at the World barista championships someday."

Ziela shows us how a cup of coffee is prepared…

1. She takes an order from the customer at the electronic Point Of Sale machine (POS), which is also the cash register.

2. She then prepares the ground coffee from the grinder. This is where Ziela makes either a single or double espresso, based on the kind of coffee a customer orders.

3. The ground coffee is then placed in the espresso machine. The hot water from the machine will extract a nice fresh hot cup of espresso from the ground coffee.

BARISTA’s TIP: An espresso machine is used to produce the traditional Italian coffee beverage called espresso. Generally, espresso is produced by forcing 90°C water through 7-10 grams of finely ground coffee, which has been densely compressed.

4. For milk based coffee drinks like a Café Latte or Cappuccino, Ziela will pour some fresh milk to be steamed to add to the coffee.

BARISTA’s TIP: Never fill the container more than 50% full. This allows for the milk to expand. Try using stainless steel steaming mugs with a pourer. Use very cold, fresh milk. Generally, higher content fat milk (like whole milk) works better for steaming.

5. The milk is then steamed to 140 degrees Celsius to get the milk creamy, which she will then add to the coffee.

6. Voila! Another happy Gloria Jean’s customer is served.

Keep up the cool job, Ziela!
