As 2001 rapidly draws to a close, it is an important time to reflect
on our achievements and successes during the year. However, some of
us because of our bad experience or involuntary loss of our job may
wish to consign 2001 to history and forget that it ever happened. But
little do we realize by closely examining our failings, failures, successes
and achievements will we discover the seeds of our future success. It
is in sowing these seeds in 2002 and beyond that we will grow to heights
we never though possible.
It is often in our failings and failure that we learn to redefine success
on our terms. Future victories are often carved from the knowledge and
understanding of our mistakes and failures. It is from the experience
of setbacks do we learn to take wise and calculated risks without gambling
our future. Opportunities sometimes present themselves in strange ways.
Charting 2001
Start by drawing a straight line across a piece of A4 size paper. Better
still an A3 size paper. Divide the line into 12 equal segments for each
month of 2001. Mark on the appropriate 'monthly' segment three major
successful events and three major setbacks encountered during the year.
Setbacks are painful and by examining them the more we will learn about
doing the right things.
For each of the events and setbacks, focus on all the things you did
wrong and right. Write them down. Carefully examine if there is a recurrent
theme of the things you are doing wrong. Usually there is.
